An Ode to Exceptional Chardonnays

In addition to its roots in Périgord Pourpre, Maison Wessman, driven by Robert Wessman’s profound love for Chardonnay, established itself in Limoux from the very beginning. Today, it boasts 26 hectares, primarily located in the Haute Vallée, including stunning parcels in the commune of La Serpent.

Thanks to these exceptional terroirs, winemaking techniques on par with the greatest Chardonnay cuvées, ultra-selective blending, and the involvement of Andreas Larsson, Best Sommelier of the World, Maison Wessman produces truly exceptional Chardonnays in Limoux.

The Perfect Terroir to Enhance Chardonnay

Nestled at the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees, Limoux benefits from a unique climate shaped by Mediterranean and oceanic influences, tempered by mountain breezes. The Limoux appellation is divided into four terroirs:

  • Mediterranean Terroir and Autan Terroir: These areas enjoy a warm and dry climate.

  • Oceanic Terroir: Located west of Limoux, this terroir is characterized by a humid and temperate climate. The Chardonnay thrives in its freshness.

Haute Vallée Terroir: With altitudes exceeding 400 meters, this terroir rises along the Pyrenean slopes. Cooler and wetter, it is ideal for producing premium Chardonnays.

Bugalys Vineyard: An Exceptional Terroir in Limoux

The Bugalys vineyard in Limoux spans 26 hectares of vines across three iconic parcels, embodying the richness and diversity of Limoux’s terroirs.

La Serpent: The Jewel of the Estate

The highlight of the estate is La Serpent vineyard, located at the highest point of the appellation, 400 meters above sea level in the Haute Vallée. Recognized as the appellation’s most premium terroir, it is defined by clay soils that retain moisture and withstand summer droughts, natural slopes promoting effective rainwater drainage, and partially shaded plots that ensure coolness throughout the growing season. The cool nights characteristic of this terroir slow the ripening of the grapes, preserving their acidity and developing refined aromas. These conditions produce grapes of remarkable purity and concentration, perfect for crafting complex and balanced wines.

The estate also includes parcels in Ajac (Oceanic Terroir) and Saint-Polycarpe, known for their north-facing orientation and oceanic influence. These parcels contribute complementary profiles, enriching the diversity of Bugalys blends and enhancing the complexity of the wines.

Maison Wessman strives to elevate this heritage through sustainable and meticulous viticultural practices. The vineyard is HVE3 certified. Natural or sown grassing alternates between rows to preserve biodiversity and improve soil structure, while herbicide use is limited to narrow strips to minimize environmental impact.

Alti Bugalys Cuvée: The Ultimate Expression of La Serpent Terroir

The Alti Bugalys cuvée reflects Maison Wessman’s vision of excellence in Limoux. Sourced almost exclusively from the parcels of La Serpent, this cuvée embodies the purity and freshness characteristic of the terroir. Every step of its creation is marked by exemplary precision, from grape selection to aging.

The grapes for Alti Bugalys are hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and gently pressed in a 25-hectoliter press to ensure a respectful and delicate extraction. Winemaking employs a gravity-based method, avoiding any harsh handling of the juices. Special attention is given to aging, carried out exclusively in 300-liter Burgundy barrels made from Jura oak with a light toast. This choice enhances the Chardonnay while preserving its balance and freshness. Aging alternates between new barrels and one-year-old barrels, adding structure and complexity to the wines.

To maintain the wine’s natural acidity and longevity, no malolactic fermentation is performed. Bâtonnage is carried out judiciously, approximately every three weeks depending on the vintage, enriching the texture without compromising aromatic precision. Alti Bugalys is an exceptional cuvée, crafted to showcase the full potential of Limoux’s finest terroirs.
Production: 4,000 to 5,000 bottles.

Bugalys Cuvée: Freshness and Accessibility

The Bugalys cuvée complements the estate’s white wine offerings by presenting more accessible wines while maintaining the identity and quality synonymous with Maison Wessman. These wines are crafted from the remaining grapes after Alti Bugalys selection, supplemented by blends from the Saint-Polycarpe and Ajac parcels.

Produced with the same care as its prestigious counterpart, the Bugalys cuvée retains the freshness and elegance characteristic of Limoux Chardonnays. Though more approachable and easy to enjoy, these wines maintain beautiful acidity and balanced structure, making them ideal for convivial and relaxed consumption. Through a reasoned approach to winemaking, the Bugalys cuvée offers a perfect introduction to the estate’s excellence while staying true to Maison Wessman’s principles of sustainability and precision.

Crémant Bugalys: The Heritage of Effervescence

Crémant Bugalys is part of Limoux’s long-standing tradition of sparkling wines, a region known for producing the world’s first sparkling wines even before Champagne. Crafted primarily from Chardonnay, this Crémant highlights the freshness and elegance of the appellation’s flagship grape variety.

Produced using the traditional method, Crémant Bugalys undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, giving it fine bubbles and a silky texture. Aging on the lees is carried out with care, developing complex aromas while preserving the wine’s vibrancy and aromatic precision.
