An Extremely Demanding Terroir

The soil surrounding Saint-Cernin is defined by a pure, dense, and minimally fissured limestone slab covered by a very thin topsoil layer of 20 to 50 centimeters. This unique composition forces the vines to develop deep root systems, naturally limiting yields and concentrating the grapes’ flavors. The compact limestone provides excellent drainage, while deep water reserves help the vines withstand summer droughts.

Ideal Climate and Exposure

At an altitude higher than other Bergerac estates, the vineyard enjoys optimal sun exposure, ensuring perfect ripening. Cool summer nights play a crucial role in preserving the grapes' acidity, balancing the richness of flavors developed under the warm daytime sun. These conditions give Saint-Cernin wines their vertical structure and finesse.

Precision and Sustainable Practices

Every step of the vineyard reflects a pure commitment to excellence. Grape thinning limits yield per vine, ensuring even ripening, while manual leaf removal exposes the berries to light, enhancing their aromatic concentration. Hand harvesting for the estate’s top cuvées, with rigorous double sorting before and after destemming to ensure only the finest, healthiest grapes are vinified. The vineyard is HVE4 certified.

In the cellar, winemaking is overseen by Julien Viaud of Rolland & Associates. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks with strict temperature control to preserve the wines’ aromatic purity and structure. The wines are aged for 18 months in carefully selected French oak barrels, with fine-grained wood and light toasting that subtly enhances the natural aromas without overwhelming them.

Located in Conne-de-Labarde, in the heart of the Bergerac region and just moments from Château de Saint-Cernin, Verdots Vineyard spans 55 hectares across the Issigeac plateau. As an expressive estate within Maison Wessman, it offers a nuanced and multifaceted interpretation of the South-West terroirs.

The Synergy of Tradition and Modernity

At Verdots, heritage and innovation work in harmony. The estate cultivates the emblematic grape varieties of South-West France: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, alongside Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle.

Its wines proudly carry the appellations AOP Bergerac, AOP Côtes-de-Bergerac, and AOP Monbazillac, reflecting the diversity of the region.

Singular Geological Diversity

Situated on the lower section of Issigeac’s geological “millefeuille,” the vineyard rests on a complex mosaic of clay, limestone, and flint soils.

This diversity enables a precise parcel-by-parcel approach:

White wines show freshness and mineral tension

Each plot is cultivated according to its own character, ensuring authentic terroir expression.

Innovation and Sustainable Commitment

Deeply rooted in environmental respect, the estate blends time-honored expertise with responsible viticulture.

A comprehensive soil study conducted in 1998 allowed cultivation methods to align with each parcel’s natural potential, particularly within the clay-limestone terroirs of Conne-de-Labarde.

Since 2022, a vitiforestry initiative, developed in partnership with Agri Sud-Ouest Innovation, has strengthened biodiversity through the planting of thousands of trees and managed grassing between vine rows.

Currently pursuing High Environmental Value (HVE3) certification, the vineyard embraces sustainable practices while maintaining uncompromising winemaking standards.

Exceptional Terroir in Limoux

Our Bugalys vineyard in Limoux spans 26 hectares of vines across three iconic parcels, showcasing the richness and diversity of Limoux’s terroirs. Nestled at the foothills of the eastern Pyrenees, the region benefits from a climate shaped by Mediterranean and oceanic influences, tempered by mountain breezes.

La Serpent: The Jewel of the Estate

The highlight of the estate in Limoux, is the La Serpent vineyard, located at the highest point of the appellation, 400 meters above sea level in the Haute Vallée. Recognized as the appellation’s most premium terroir, it is defined by clay soils that retain moisture and withstand summer droughts, natural slopes promoting effective rainwater drainage, and partially shaded plots that ensure coolness throughout the growing season. The cool nights characteristic of this terroir slow the ripening of the grapes, preserving their acidity and developing refined aromas. These conditions produce grapes of remarkable purity and concentration, perfect for crafting complex and balanced wines.

The estate also includes parcels in Ajac (Oceanic Terroir) and Saint-Polycarpe, known for their north-facing orientation and oceanic influence. These parcels contribute complementary profiles, enriching the diversity of our Chardonnay blends and enhancing the complexity of the wines.

Maison Wessman strives to elevate this heritage through sustainable and meticulous viticultural practices. The vineyard is HVE3 certified. Natural or sown grassing alternates between rows to preserve biodiversity and improve soil structure, while herbicide use is limited to narrow strips to minimize environmental impact.
